Ameraucanas
Being one of the most well known breeds of blue egg layers, Ameraucanas are friendly, beautiful, and productive. Ameraucanas are a fairly new breed, developed in the 1970's in The United States. Derived from the Araucana chicken of Chile, the goal was to retain the blue egg gene of the parent breed but eliminate the lethal, tufted gene carried by the Araucana which caused chicks to die in the shell several days before hatching. Ameraucanas are well known for their beards and "ear muffs" and are great layers. They lay an average of 300, medium sized blue eggs per year.
