Black Copper Marans
The original chocolate egg layer, these beautiful birds are well known for their gorgeous eggs. They were developed in the mid 1800's in Northern France near the port town of Marans. In that time, cock fighting was a popular sport among sailors for entertainment on long journeys at sea. When sailors would bring their favorite fighting cocks to the area, these fighting cocks were bred with the local marsh hens. Over time, the Marans chicken was created. While they are not considered the be the most productive layers, averaging about 3-4 eggs a week per hen during peak laying season, their eggs are extra large in size and score a 10 in beauty.
