Muscovy Ducks
Muscovy ducks are a unique breed of duck originating from Mexico, Central America, and South America. They were first domesticated by Native Americans in those regions. Though they are a tropical duck, they adapt very well to much cold climates. These are a non-migrating breed with males usually being too heavy for sustained flight. Females on average weigh between 6-8 lbs with males weighing in at 12-15 lbs at maturity. Muscovies are known for being a very quiet breed of duck. Unlike other breeds, they very rarely quack. Instead, females make soft cooing sounds while males have a raspy hissing voice. They tend to be friendly. A pond is also not a necessity for Muscovies as they are perfectly content to free range daily as long as they have a deep water dish to submerge their bill. They can lay roughly 200 eggs per year but the females love to raise babies and will often go broody.
