Thursday, May 9, 2019 started like any other morning. Wake up, get the kids off to school, feed the flock, and grab some breakfast. This week was chick week at our local feed mill. Every year, they do a promotion where you get so many chicks for every bag of feed that you buy over the prior 6 weeks. I was set to pick up 36 little pullets, I just needed to call them and see if the chicks were in. They were! So we jumped in the car and headed down to pick up our little balls of fluff. Now, as we don't eat many eggs anymore, and we only breed pure stock and specific breeds, these chicks were going to be sold but they're always so cute to have around. The next swap day just happened to be Saturday so that morning, we packed up the car and headed off! We were getting set up in our spot when I noticed something odd in the pen of pullets. It was as if a miniature chick has it's legs stuck under another or something. I reached in and what I found just absolutely amazed me! We have a 4-legged chick! I was dumbstruck! Right then and there, we knew that she would be
a permanent member of our flock. When we made it back home, we posted pictures on facebook, and went to our friends on www.backyardchickens.com to find a good name for our little surprise. So many names were suggested but the one that struck us as perfect was Ripley, as in Ripley's Believe it or Not. She's a week old now and thriving! I will try to keep updates going regularly here and on her facebook page to share her growth and development, triumphs and struggles.
