Turkeys
Here at our home, we love all of our birds, but the turkeys are an easy favorite. Like big, feathered dogs, they follow us around the yard, beg for treats, and generally enjoy our company. All domestic turkeys are derived from Mexican wild turkeys. The first turkeys are believed to have been domesticated around 2,000 years ago, possibly by the Aztecs. Turkeys were brought to Europe from Central America around 1519 and many different distinct breeds were created. Most turkey breeds are pretty much the same with the only difference being feather color. Turkeys are seasonal layers and typically only lay throughout the spring and summer, stopping for the year in the fall when they go through their annual molt. While they are laying, they provide extra large, speckled eggs, highly prized by chefs.
