Silkies
Silkies are the lap dog of the chicken world. A very friendly bantam breed, they are easily kept as pets and are great for children. As an old breed, it's unclear of how or where they originated from though most people believe that they had their start in China or India. Silkies are widely known for their soft, fur like feathers and black skin. In the past, rumors were spread that these soft, fluffy birds were a cross between rabbits and chickens! While they are a small breed and not well suited for eating, traditional Chinese medicine viewed the silkie as having medicinal power due to it's black/grey meat. Silkies are great mothers and go broody often, hatching as many eggs as can fit under them. Egg laying will vary from hen to hen as they lay fairly well when not brooding. *There is a possibility that we may be adding showgirls to our breeding pen! Showgirls are simply silkies with naked necks! |
